Arizona is famous for its resorts and spas, and the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain Resort and Spa is one of our favorite local places to get away.  This famous resort is a great place to spend a leisurely afternoon or evening enjoying the scenic views, eating lunch in one of the wonderful restaurants, or taking in a relaxing spa treatment.

Nestled snug-as-a-bug against the base of the valley’s famous Camelback Mountain in Scottsdale, it might seem like you’re miles away from the city.  That is, however, until you see the impressive city views.  Then, you’ll realize you’re right in the middle of the city!  It’s a little off the main thoroughfares, so you might need to use a map to find the place.  However, it’s well worth the drive.

The Reflection Area

Originally built in the 1950s, this resort was once a world-famous retreat for celebrities, movie stars, and politicians.  It has been renovated and continues to be one of the most prestigious resorts in the Valley.

A View of the Casitas

The grounds of this resort are impressive.  The landscaping is like a beautiful desert oasis with large palms, bougainvillea,
gardenias, and birds of paradise.   Meandering walkways connect the restaurant, spa, tennis courts, swimming pool, and casitas.  (I’ve always thought it would be so much fun to stay here!)  Although the scenic views of the mountains and the cityscapes are spectacular, the ambiance is quiet and low-key.    The emphasis seems to be on the natural beauty of the surroundings, evidenced by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the dining areas, outdoor patios, and plenty of outdoor seating .

The Asian-inspired spa is beautiful and calming.  There’s a meditation garden as well as a tranquility pool in the middle of the courtyard where guests can enjoy the views or nap in chaise lounges.   Guests are free to spend the day, if they would like.  Fluffy velour robes are the standard apparel and herbal teas, fruit, nuts, and berry-infused water are complimentary.  Spa services include treatments for skin care, massage therapies, body treatments, massages, and nail treatments, to name a few.

After the spa treatments, we like to go to the Elements Restaurant.  The Elements outdoor seating area overlooks the swimming pool and is another quiet retreat where guests can take in the views and dine in casual comfort.  We order a couple of items from the tapas menu and the servings are generous enough to share.  Their hummus and veggies with pitas are delish!

Hi Renee. Yes, it is so beautiful and peaceful there — even though it’s right in the middle of the city! The kids have given us gift certificates for the spa a couple of times. What a treat! It’s a great “get-away” without leaving town!

Scottsdale has been on my list of places to visit for a while now. I can’t get over those views! I will have to put this resort on my list of places to check out. What is your favorite spa treatment?

Hi Valerie. My favorite spa treatments are facials — and their is delightful! My skin feels soft and hydrated, which is REALLY important in this part of the country! I’ve always heard that facials will postpone one’s need for more intense treatments as the years go by. I hope it’s true! Because I’m sure not a candidate for something more intense and painful!
